Margaret Kurzok is an Australian gem with an amazing story. Through determination and self-belief, Marg has overcome many obstacles to achieve success in business and in life.

Marg was born in Melbourne and grew up in Altona where as a young girl she was involved in dancing and swimming. The wonderful costumes inspired her zeal for fashion and she also became the youngest girl in Victoria to receive the Bronze Cross.

She had a tough start from an early age. Marg left school and started work at 14, she got married at 17, had her first baby at 18, and then left her abusive husband at 21.

Marg battled the social stigma of being a single mother in the early 70s – there were barriers against her purchasing furniture, being hired for work and buying a house. By 26 she had saved enough to make a 40 percent deposit but was turned down for a loan. With her strong sense of survival, Marg contacted Mike Willesee of A Current Affair. He interviewed her in front of a building society and she had her home loan by the end of the show!

A few years later Marg began working for Trevor Roller Shutters. In the coming years Marg managed the door division and rebuilt the business. During this time she got to know and work with Bob Kurzok, the founder of Steel-line Garage Doors in Queensland. In 1987 Marg became Bob's business partner and formed a new company called Steel-line Victoria Pty Ltd. During this time she was featured in BRW wearing a pink and black spotted dress sitting on her pink Steel-line truck (love the 80s!).

After building up her Victorian arm of the company, Marg married Bob and moved to Queensland. Over the next 20 years, they worked together to grow the business from two branches to 16 across Australia. From 1997 to 2007 they were consistently ranked among the top three companies in the garage industry in Australia.

During her life, Marg has experienced her share of lows as well as her professional highs. She understands the needs and health concerns of women, particularly breast cancer, which she herself suffered and overcame in 2000.

In 2007 Marg won the QBR Women In Business award for Manufacturing. In 2007 Marg was also a finalist for the Owner Manager Award of the Australian Institute of Management. In that same year, Bob and Marg decided they had achieved everything they had hoped for with Steel-line and sold the company for a change of pace and scenery. Marg remains a board member of Steel-line Australia.
